Homan Lumber is a supplier of lumber and commodity building materials throughout northern Indiana, and southern lower Michigan. It is the goal of our company to consistently supply high quality material, at a competitive price, with unsurpassed commitment to customer service.
Company Profile Homan Lumber traces its beginning back to 1939 when Robert G. Homan purchased Elkhart Lumber & Sawmill, 2100 N. Johnson Street, Elkhart, Indiana. Throughout the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s Elkhart Lumber operated as a local producer of native hardwood lumber, a custom cabinet and window shop, a retail and contractor supply outlet and producer of wood components for the blossoming recreational vehicle manufacturing market. During the early 1950’s R.G Homan’s son, Robert Wilson Homan, joined the company fulfilling various duties including lumber buyer. In 1964 the Homans acquired property at 1650 W. Lusher Avenue in Elkhart and constructed what is today known as Homan Lumber Co. The new facility featured a modern “cash-and-carry” retail format, as well as a state of the art component cutting operation to meet the needs of the ever growing recreational vehicle and modular home building markets. The new location also featured a rail siding within the yard, which would accommodate up to eight railcars at one time. Robert Wilson Homan took responsibility for the Lusher Avenue facility in 1968, and was responsible for positioning the company as a leading supplier of lumber and building materials to area manufacturers, builders and home owners. During this time, Homan Lumber developed an impeccable reputation for delivering superior products supported by an unsurpassed commitment to customer service. Robert W. Homan provided continued leadership to the company serving as its’ president and CEO during this time, eventually purchasing the business from his father in 1979.
